Dr. Vicky Tagalakis leads JGH doctors into the future of healthcare

In July 2023, Dr. Vicky Tagalakis was named Physician-in-Chief of the JGH. Dr. Tagalakis sees one of her roles as helping the hospital fulfill its mission to develop new ways of delivering “Care Everywhere.”

“The JGH and the JGH Foundation are thinking in new ways, and that’s exciting,” she said. “It’s very innovative to bring care to the patient wherever they are.”

OROT illuminates the path of innovation and digital transformation of healthcare

JGH’s Tele-Dermatology service supports early diagnosis of skin cancer

“Early diagnosis is the absolute key.” That’s the mantra of Dr. Robin Billick, Chief of Dermatology at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) since the division was created in the mid-1980s.

“JGH Foundation donors support our research, our specialized equipment and our good work for patients,” Dr. Billick said. “This allows us to continue to be a leader in the field.”

Day Hospital is a key element of the JGH’s Child Psychiatry services

The Department of Child Psychiatry at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) couldn’t fully offer what it does without the support of donors to the JGH Foundation.

“We’ve been very blessed that people think of us and want to help us,” said Dr. Paola Habib, the Director of Child Psychiatry at the JGH’s Centre for Child Development and Mental Health. “Our work is only possible because of donations. The kids and families are very grateful.”

JGH’s Geriatric Medicine Department supports the elderly with innovative initiatives

Dr. Ruby Friedman, Director of Geriatric Medicine at the JGH, likes to remind medical students of one important thing: “Over the course of their career, almost every doctor will see a lot of elderly patients.”

Dr. Friedman, whose career in geriatric medicine at the JGH began in 1985, is very proud of the JGH’s long history of prioritizing geriatric medicine, thanks to the long-standing vision of JGH and JGH Foundation leaders.

The JGH’s Hospital@Home program keeps growing due to its overwhelming popularity

The JGH’s Hospital@Home program allows some patients to complete their hospitalization at home while being constantly monitored by the virtual care team.

“Donor support was crucial in allowing us to get Hospital@Home off the ground quickly, rather than waiting for government funding,” said Erin Cook, Director of Quality, Transformation, Evaluation, Value, Ethics and Virtual Care.

JGH Foundation donors fund world-leading cancer innovations

Dr. Gerald Batist is enthusiastic when he talks about projects of the cancer research team he heads as Director of the Segal Cancer Centre at the JGH.

“We’re making progress on all fronts,” he said. “We’re able to diagnose cancers earlier, we can do liquid biopsies using just blood samples to learn the DNA of tumours, and we have new targeted treatments and ways to deliver them. There are many exciting projects we are working on.”

JGH Foundation donors fund innovative program for people with scleroderma

The JGH is the home to an innovative program to help scleroderma patients called the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network (SPIN), led by psychologist Dr. Brett Thombs. Dr. Marie Hudson is a member of the SPIN steering committee and works closely with the program, though her focus as a rheumatologist is on medical research into treating the disease.
