The Jewish General Hospital 10th Anniversary of the Segal Cancer Centre elegant gala took place on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at L'Arsenal, Montreal.
Co-chaired by Jonathan Wener (Canderel) and Charles Sirois (Telesystem) with Honourary Patrons Emmelle and Alvin Segal, the elegant event drew over 500 guests, including JGH physicians, researchers, nurses, and community and hospital leaders, as well as generous supporters and friends of the Jewish General Hospital.
Highlights of the event included the opening song to the Broadway musical, RENT led by Lindsay Robins Dubrovsky, a Donald Trump impersonator who acted as MC and in a fun yet meaningful way, show-cased highlights of what has taken place at the centre over the past 10 years. As well, the Segal Centre for Performing Arts paid a very special tribute to Alvin Segal by performing the opening song from the Broadway musical Hamilton, which was re-written to depict his life and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
In 2006, the Jewish General Hospital embarked on a new era in the battle against cancer. Success demanded a great facility, staffed by talented and dedicated professionals and supported by caring philanthropists. These are the three pillars upon which the Segal Cancer Centre was built and is sustained. Over these past 10 years, the Segal Cancer Centre has become the leading cancer treatment centre in Quebec, implementing a focussed and comprehensive approach to fighting cancer through medical treatment, patient care, family support and scientific research.
The Centre's research and innovative models of cancer care are now recognized on an international level and "The Segal" has become a magnet for cancer patients across Quebec. The Centre welcomed over 20,000 patients last year alone. Considering that 45% of men and 40% of women will develop cancer during their lifetime, the SCC is truly a wonderful example of how we can partner together to lead the way in the fight against cancer.
The event raised $1,400,000 which will benefit the SCC as well as some clinical trials carried out within the McPeak-Sirois Group of clinical research in breast cancer. The goal of this project, shared by the 4 major Quebec hospital research centres in the fight against breast cancer (JGH, CHU de Quebec, MUHC and CHUM), is to improve care given to patients suffering from breast cancer through better access to clinical trials.
Thanks to the incredible support of our generous donors, the Segal Cancer Centre teams of caregivers and scientists will continue to search for and find a cure for cancer.
