The aging population creates new challenges for the JGH and the entire healthcare system. Older patients are disproportionately afflicted by multiple, often chronic conditions that require frequent physician visits and longer hospital stays. Cancer, heart disease, dementia, diabetes, stroke and osteoporosis are becoming more common. These disorders will increasingly influence and shape our lives and those of our families. The need to find the causes of these diseases, improve their management and discover new treatments, places medical research at the very centre of a healthier future.
“If you’re ill, you want to be at a hospital that’s constantly aware of what’s coming down the road, that’s pushing the limits of medical knowledge, that crosses the boundaries between pure and applied research. Because if you’re at the limits of treatment with nowhere to go, you live for hope—and research provides that hope.”
– Dr. Roderick McInnes, Director, Lady Davis Institute
The JGH has made a major commitment to medical research, with a focus on bringing new discoveries from the bench to the bedside as quickly as possible. The Lady Davis Institute conducts research into the causes and potential treatments for the most common illnesses affecting us today. Strong research programs have been established in cancer, the psychosocial aspects of illness, epidemiology and public health, hemovascular medicine and aging, as well as AIDS, mental illness and health services.
Over the next decade, we will witness remarkable discoveries and findings that will improve the delivery and quality of health care and make real differences to the lives of patients, the health of populations, and the effectiveness of policy makers. However, government funding does not fully cover research and the funds available each year are decreasing. To deliver on the promise of research, support from the entire JGH community —in the form of outright gifts or endowments that provide a stable, recurrent source of funding—is critical.
With private support, the LDI will be able to:
It has been proven, many times over, that the best patient care is provided by academic health centres like the JGH-LDI that are firmly committed to research. An institution that does not continue to grow and evolve will not continue to provide the best care. Private support will be the driving force behind our success in moving forward in all fields of research, with the goal of finding answers to today’s most pressing medical questions.
